This antique icon depicts the Blessed Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus, inspired by the famous image of Salus Populi Romani (“Protectress of the Roman People”), venerated in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome.
Painted in the 18th century, the Virgin is represented with a solemn and compassionate expression, clothed in a deep blue mantle adorned with a star and cross. The Child Jesus rests on her lap, looking towards her with trust and tenderness.

Encased in a gilded wooden frame, this icon combines both devotional and artistic value. The Salus Populi Romani is one of the most revered Marian images, carried in procession during times of plague and war, and considered a powerful symbol of intercession and protection.
